A native of Toledo, Ohio, Chad Rutkowski is entering his ninth year as the Head Girls Volleyball Coach at Sylvania Northview High School, the 2022 and 2020 District Champions, the 2021 and 2018 District VII Runner-up, and the 2022 Northern Lakes League Champions. In 2018, Rutkowski was named the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Division 1 State Coach of the Year and in 2022 he was named Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Achievement Award winner along with two other coaches.

In his eight seasons at the helm at Northview, Rutkowski has posted a 118 – 78 overall record and a 76 – 36 record in the Northern Lakes League, with a career record of 136 – 87 (eight years at Northview, one year at Cardinal Stritch). He recorded his 100th career win during the 2021 season with a victory at Springfield in five sets. In addition, Rutkowski has had the honor of coaching 33 All Northern Lakes League selections, 5 All TAAC League selections, 30 All District VII selections, 10 All Ohio selections, and 13 college volleyball commitments (6 at the Division 1 level, 5 at the Division 2 level, 1 at the Junior College level, and 1 at the NAIA level).

In the spring of 2024, Rutkowski launched the inaugural Northview Boys Volleyball program. 

As a profession, Rutkowski works in Wealth Management at Croak Asset Management, LLC in downtown Toledo a fiduciary wealth management firm for clients who want personal service combined with evidence, analytical, and goals-based investments. 

Before being at Croak Asset Management, Rutkowski was the Senior Development Officer at United Way of Greater Toledo, serving Lucas, Wood, and Ottawa counties where he helped oversee and manage the Development and Fundraising efforts which historically brings in over $9 million dollars annually in donations from individuals within the workplace and community to support programs and agencies in Lucas, Wood, and Ottawa counties. 

Before UWGT, Rutkowski co-led Premier Academy facility, which is home to one of the largest youth volleyball clubs, which has achieved a combined total of 40 National Medals, 78 All-American selections, and over 300 college commitments, making it the most sought-after training facility in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. In addition to our youth programs, we are also the largest sports facility in the area that hosts indoor adult volleyball leagues. In addition to his full-time duties, he also coaches for Premier Academy where he has earned a 2013 AAU Bronze Medal, 2014 AAU Silver Medal, and 2016 AAU Bronze Medal and has been allowed to coach teams internationally on tours through Nicaragua, and throughout Europe in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and Italy while coaching through Bring It Promotions and the European Global Challenge.

Rutkowski came to Premier Academy after spending three years as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Director of Student Activities at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School and St. Kateri Catholic Academy. Rutkowski was 11th full-time athletic staff member in school history.  Before working for the St. Kateri Catholic Schools, Rutkowski spent three years with The Famous San Diego Chicken (TFC, Inc.).  He still works with TFC Inc. during the summer months when he is able and has been with the company for a total of 11 years now.  He served as the Assistant Managing Director with TFC, Inc., which is a traveling marketing and promotions company, which works in various areas of sport, specifically with Minor League Baseball.  In his tenure with TFC, Inc., Rutkowski worked in 3 Triple-A All-Star Games and in 170 different Minor League and Major League Baseball parks throughout the country.  

Before his tenure with TFC, Inc., Rutkowski worked for the Toledo Mud Hens Baseball Club as a member of their marketing department, Bowling Green State University as a member of their athletic operations department, Bowling Green High School as a member of their athletic department, Super Bowl XL, and at the CYO as a member of their sport staff. 

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education – Sport Management from Bowling Green State University in 2008 and earned his Master of Science in Education – Sport Administration from the institution in 2010. 

Currently, Rutkowski, 38, resides in Oregon, Ohio with his husband, Kevin, and their dogs Beau and Harper

Associate Head Varsity Coach

Biography:

Matthew Trzcinski is beginning his first season at Northview High School. Trzcinski began coaching in 2008 and spent over a dozen years at Notre Dame Academy in varying roles within the volleyball program. He also coaches for Toledo Volleyball Club and serves on the board of directors. 

 

A 2001 graduate from Saint Francis de Sales High School, he was on the water polo and swimming teams. Trzcinski went on to play water polo for the University of Toledo’s club team and eventually played for the club volleyball team as well.

Junior Varsity Head Coach & Varsity Assistant Coach

Biography:

Year Started at Northview: 2023

Kristen Trzcinski is beginning her first season at Northview High School as the JV volleyball coach. Kristen comes from much experience having coached at the high school and college level. Kristen played 4 years for Clay High School and 2 years for Owens Community College where she was their setter. Following college ball, Kristen started coaching at Clay High School where she coached for 5 years. That eventually led her to Cardinal Stritch, Anthony Wayne, Owens, and Notre Dame Academy where she took on many different rolls. Kristen also coaches for Toledo Volleyball Club.

When not in the gym, Kristen works as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in skilled rehab/long term care settings. In her free time, she enjoys being outside, especially by the pool, shopping, and enjoying time with family and friends.

Freshman Head Coach & Varsity Assistant Coach

Biography:

Year started at Northview: 2023

A native to Ida, MI, Skylar Iott is entering her first year of coaching volleyball at Sylvania Northview High School. 

As an outstanding outside hitter during her playing days, Iott played for Northview Head Coach Chad Rutkowski at Premier Volleyball Academy for 5 years and was an All-American her senior year. For her high school career, she attended St. Mary's Catholic Central in Monroe, Michigan, she was a State Champion (junior year), State Runner-up (senior year), as well as a Miss Volleyball finalist in the state of Michigan. 

Collegiately, she played Division 1 volleyball at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, voted team MVP, and joined the 1,000 kill club during her senior year, where she currently ranked 6th in kills in program history.

After graduating with a degree in Public Health, she played professionally in Europe for two seasons: the first year she played in the second league in France and in her second season, she played in the first league in Austria.

As a profession, now that she has retired as a professional athlete, she works as an educator at the Monroe County Youth Center and coaches high school camps during the summer.

Currently, Iott, 24 resides in Ida, Michigan. 

 

Heidi Wiczynski.


Volunteer Assistant Coach

Biography:

Year Started at Northview: 2018

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Heidi Wiczynski is entering her fifth season at Sylvania Northview High School. In 2021, Wiczynski will be taking on a new role with the Northview Volleyball program as she is currently enrolled in school for her masters in nursing program over the course of the next coupe of years. In 2020, Wiczynski will lead the JV team, her previous two seasons spent leading the freshman team.  In her second season with the LadyKats, Wiczynski posted a 15-7 overall record and a record of 11-3 in the Northern Lakes League (NLL). In her first season with the Wildcats, Wiczynski coached her team to a very successful season with a 17-4 overall record and a 13-1 record in the NLL, earning a league championship.

Wiczynski attended Regina Coeli Grade School where she was a multi-sport athlete winning two Diocesan Championships in both volleyball and basketball. Wiczynski went on to play both volleyball and basketball at Notre Dame Academy. In her senior volleyball season, Wiczynski was given the honor of representing NDA at the CYO fall sports banquet. Wiczynski played travel volleyball for Glass City Volleyball Club for 9 seasons while also playing 6 seasons of travel basketball for her dad, John Wiczynski, where they earned two AYBT National Championships.

After graduating from Notre Dame Academy with a 3.89 GPA, Wiczynski went on to continue her academics and volleyball career at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. After undergoing multiple knee surgeries, Wiczynski returned home to The University of Toledo where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Occupational Therapy.

Wiczynski started coaching high school volleyball in 2012 at Start High School as the Freshman Coach. After one season at Start, Wiczynski went on to be the Freshman Coach at Whitmer High School. In 2015, Wiczynski moved up to coach at the junior varsity level while also coaching at The Toledo Volleyball Club.

Currently Wiczynski is the Patient Service Coordinator for the ProMedica Physicians Pulmonary and Sleep Group working in multiple locations, including Toledo Hospital, Flower Hospital, and Fostoria Hospital. In her spare time, coach Heidi enjoys traveling, playing in adult volleyball leagues, attending sporting events, country concerts, and any and all events at The University of Michigan.

Volunteer Assistant Coach

Biography:


A 2019 Northview graduate, Aubrey is entering her third year on the coaching staff at Northview. Aubrey played all 4 years at Northview, being apart of a district runner up team in 2018. Her first year out of high school, she picked up her first coaching job at Arbor Hills Junior High for the 7th grade team, and then was asked to be apart of the Northview Volleyball program. 

Aubrey is currently a full-time student at the University of Toledo studying Exercise Science, where she hopes to become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. Outside of school, she also works 2 part time jobs as well as coaching.

Biography:

Tina McClain played at Archbold High School then played and coached another 10 years throughout the greater Toledo area before having her family. She is married with 11 year old twins, Logan and Lyla, and 8 year old Blake.  She is entering her third year on the staff of Northview and is excited to be a part of Northview and looks forward to continued success with the program.

Volunteer Assistant Coach

Biography:

Year Started at Northview: 2023

 

A native to Sylvania and a 2018 graduate and Norhtview Volleyball alum, Rachel Phalen is entering her first year of coaching volleyball at Sylvania Northview High School. 

As an outstanding outside hitter during her playing days, Phalen played for Northview during the 2014 through 2017 seasons and played varsity all 4 years. She was apart of the 2015 team that won the NLL conference, and was also named an AAU All-American in the spring of 2016. She played travel at the Premier Academy where, unfortunately, she sustained an ACL injury going into my senior year and I did not get to play for Northview in the fall of 2017. She was able to play her last year of club volleyball, where she signed with the University of Charleston in West Virginia, a division 2 school that competes in the Mountain East Conference (MEC).

Collegiately, Phalen played at University of Charleston for 3 years where she sustained another knee injury to her meniscus early in her freshman year. She has played volleyball for 14 years and learned so much about the game especially being injured and taking a more learning/coaching role during that time.

Currently, Phalen, 23 resides in Sylvania, Ohio.
