Kelsey Cortright and Andrew Haughawout Join the Northview Staff

Sylvania, Ohio – Chad Rutkowski, entering his sixth year at the helm of the Northview Volleyball program, welcomes two new additions to their staff: Kelsey Cortright, Head Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant; and Andrew Haughawout, Head Freshman Coach and Varsity Assistant. “To say I am excited to have both Kelsey and Andrew join our program would be a huge understatement,” Rutkowski said. “Both of these individuals are beyond qualified to lead their own programs and are the ultimate professionals: we are very lucky that they have selected to join the NVVB family. The knowledge, passion and energy they will bring to our program will be contagious. My respect for both of them as great people has only grown during this process as they both exude the values of our program, our school, and our community. I am eager to get them on campus to start this journey in a few short weeks!”

Cortright is making the transition to Northview after spending the last three seasons as the head coach of volleyball program at Adrian Madison High School after a six year stint at North Adams-Jerome High School where she won a combined eight conference titles and six district titles. Haughawout is coming back to coaching at the high school level and said he is proud to join such a class act program and one of the best in the state of Ohio.

Haughawout is currently coaching at Toledo Volleyball Club and previously coached at Bowling Green High School for two seasons. Rutkowski said “this is a game changer for volleyball in northwest Ohio and will aid in elevating our program upwards as we strive for an NLL Championship and a repeat as District Champions, ultimately focused on representing Northwest Ohio in the State Final Four!”

Cortright and Haughawout are joining the staff of Trey Fanfulik, Associate Head Coach (7th year); Abbey Pawlak ‘15, Volunteer Assistant Coach (2nd year); Heidi Wiczynski, Volunteer Assistant Coach (4th year); and Aubrey Nemire ‘19, Volunteer Assistant Coach. Volleyball Programs Seeking New Normal with Season Approaching

STEVE JUNGA

If high school athletics resume as scheduled late next month amid the growing coronavirus pandemic, each will face new restrictions and methods of operation unique to each sport.

Football will see the most safety-related scrutiny because it is the biggest revenue-producer for most high school sports programs, and has the highest level of close, physical contact. But, other fall sports have had and will continue to face their own specific challenges.

Volleyball lost one of its biggest offseason staples when much of the travel club season — which normally runs from February through June — was halted. From mid-March until late June, there was no club play. High school coaches are now seeking creative ways to train players and refine their game skills to fill that void.

Wiczynski Promoted; Welcome Pawlak and Turner-Smith

There are some big staff changes with the Northview Volleyball program for the 2020 season. Head Coach, Chad Rutkowski, stated "we are beyond excited to announce some coaching changes within the Northview staff as we welcome Northview alum, Abbey Pawlak, back to our gym; we hire a former standout player for me at Cardinal Stritch, Sara Turner-Smith; and Coach Heidi Wiczynski will assume the role as the new Head Junior Varsity Volleyball coach."

For the 2020 season, Coach Heidi Wiczynski will resume the role of Head Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach. This comes as Coach Kayla Brown will be taking a leave as her and her husband welcome their first child. Coach Kayla will continue to be around the Northview program and in the gym throughout the season. Coach Heidi has put together a very impressive resume in her first two years leading the freshman program and we are delighted that she has agreed to take on this new role as the Head Junior Varsity Coach.

The new additions to the coaching staff include Abbey Pawlak ’15, as a Volunteer Varsity Assistant, and Sara Turner-Smith, Freshman Head Volleyball Coach. Abbey was a phenomenal libero at Northview during the 2011 – 2014 seasons, before playing four years at the University of Akron. She is currently teaching at Stranahan Elementary. Sara Turner-Smith was a standout outside hitter for Coach Chad Rutkowski at Cardinal Stritch before playing for Owens Community College.

For more information our new coaches (Pawlak, Turner-Smith), please use the previous links.
