Thoughts on my Coaching Philosophy
Program Foundations:
-
POSITIVITY must be intentional and consistent. We don’t want to dwell on the negative and we must thrive to boost confidence.
-
No profanity by coaches or players.
-
“We before me” attitude for all members of our program.
-
Success lies in simplicity. Confusion lies in sophistication. Keep it simple!
-
Everything - practices, games, team activities - must be structured and organization. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of PREPARATION.
Defensively:
-
Predominantly MAN-TO-MAN defense, taught whole-part-whole.
-
We must build habituation in how we guard! Habits are what we fall back on in pressure situations.
-
We will work very hard on what our opponents run and how to guard it.
-
We want to rebound the ball with two hands and then RUN.
Offensively:
-
Every year, we will emphasize playing INSIDE-out. Some years that will mean we throw the ball in the post a lot, others we will drive it more. We will always emphasize “penetrating cuts” in our offense.
-
We run a MOTION offense with several “quick hitter” plays that flow into our offense.
-
MAJOR emphasis on shot selection. We want A’s and B’s (see our shot rubric).
-
We want to play fast/up-tempo but not in a hurry.

Off-season Training
We believe our off-season program is the best in Northwest Ohio and is the chief reason for our program’s success. Our kids have more opportunities to get in their school’s gym than anyone in the area. We believe in simplicity - keeping things simple, but getting a lot of repetition. Because of our off-season program, we see major growth and development in the majority of our players.
In the spring, we typically have 15-20 returning players and the incoming 8th graders in our workouts. In the summer, we average 40+ players attending per day. In the fall, we typically have 30-35 guys participating.
Here is a look at what we do:
Spring
-
After the season, we are required by the OHSAA to take 28 days off. We start day #29!
-
3 days of weight training per week
-
4 days of basketball: 3 open gyms and 1 individual workout per week (we lift on 3 of the 4 days.
-
Summer
-
5 days per week in June and July.
-
3 of the 5 days we lift weights
-
All 5 days we have open gyms that are leveled. We invite 2-3 college players, Northview alum and other adults to play with our top (oldest) guys. Our younger guys, for the most part, play in leveled groups.
-
Summer league - once a week (in June) on a weekday night, we play 2 games.
-
3-4 “Shootouts” (one days tournaments) in the month of June.
-
Backyard Basketball Blind-Draw Tournament - held in Coach McDonald’s backyard.
-
By OHSAA rule, we must take the month of August off.
-
Fall
-
4-5 days per week in September and October
-
3 days of weight training
-
All 4/5 days we have basketball activities: mix of Individual workouts and open gyms
-
2018-2019 Season Outlook
